Diary of William H. Chamberlin : written while crossing the plains in '49 / by William H. Chamberlin.

Typescript carbon of original diary. The diary describes an 1849 overland journey by a group from Lewisburg, Pennsylvania to California by steamboat on the Ohio, Mississippi, and Arkansas rivers. They disembarked at Fort Smith, purchased mules, and packed their wagons for the overland trip through Indian Territory to Santa Fe where they switched to mule packing and followed Emory's route through New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and southern California. Finally the group headed north toward the goldfields and mined in several areas. The daily diary entries describe the landscape and travel conditions. During the overland journey, Chamberlin also comments on the wildlife, Mexicans, and Indians. Chamberlin mentions early European settlers in California and describes purchasing supplies and working a mine.
