Letters, 1849-1850.

William Woodward's five letters to his family describe an 1849 overland journey to the gold fields of California. Two letters from South Bend, Indiana to his family in Middletown, Connecticut explain his reasons for going and his arrangement to drive a mule wagon. The next letter describes the party and the journey from South Bend to Ottowa, Illinois, and the following letter chronicles the wagon train's journey to Columbus City, Iowa. The final letter, dated April 11th through April 30th, follows the group into western Iowa. These letters are accompanied by a letter to Woodward from his sister Elisabeth and a letter to his father from Schuyler Colfax. Elisabeth's letter dated November 29th from Middletown contains news of home and family. Colfax's 1850 letter relates the particulars of William's death and an expression of sympathy from the South Bend Lodge of Odd Fellows to the family.
