Across the plains in '61 / by Lucy H. Fosdick.

Typescript manuscript by Lucy Fosdick describing her family's migration from Massachusetts to Colorado. The narrative contains a short biography of her father who surveyed Denver, Colorado City, and other Colorado towns. He decided to settle his family in Colorado City and met them in 1861 in St. Joseph, Missouri, where they joined a wagon train. The narrative describes the prairie schooners, living conditions on the trip, Indian encounters, and buffalo herds. They settled on a farm but the father also surveyed ranches in the area. The author describes life as a pioneer child, in particular encounters with Ute Indians and Colorado's 1864 war with the Kiowas and Comanches. Fosdick writes of the family's move to a ranch in Booneville around 1863 and further Indian troubles in Colorado.
