Diary, 1849-1862.

The volume is part diary and part scrapbook. The journal, spanning March through July 1849, describes the sea voyage of the Nantucket Mining Company from New Bedford around Cape Horn to California on the bark Russell. The brief entries record weather, longitude and latitude, and activities of the company. The author names the company's officers at the beginning of the diary. The text ends before they reach the Pacific coast. The rest of the volume consists of songs, both printed and handwritten, many referring to the Civil War.
