Letters : to his wife Susan Tripp, 1849-1851.

Arnold Tripp's letters to his wife chronicle his life and work in California. From August 1849 to February, 1850 Tripp describes the voyage to California, the Accushnett Assoication, and the souring relations between members. The letters record his break with the company and his trip to the mines with Nathaniel Howard and Henry D. Scot. Although subsequent letters often mention his partners, the Association, and news from the mines, after July 1850 he foscused on his carpentry jobs, his wish to return home, and life in Stockton. His letters are filled with information on his health and fears of cholera and dysentery. He describes Stockton, comments on crime, and relays news on the Swifts, relatives in California. A letter dated November 1851 describes the Moukolumne Hill diggings where miners have transformed the landscape. Tripp's letters to his wife are accompanied by one from Tripp to his brother and a copy of a letter by Susan Tripp to her husband.
