New Almaden Mine papers, 1850-1859.

The papers document the legal efforts of Baron, Forbes & Company to protect their claim to the New Almaden mine. The collection consists primarily of correspondence from 1850 to 1859 between John Rockwell, the firm's counsel in Washington, D.C., and the firm's legal advisors in New York City, Goohue & Company and later Reverdy Johnson. The papers include correspondence with Secretary of State Lewis Cass, the President of the United States, and John S. Black, United States Consul in Mexico, concerning the lawsuit, Andres Castillero v. United States, in which the federal government tried to gain title to the mine. There are two Mexican newspapers for December 6, 1859 in the collection.
