Diaries, 1851-1904.

Two diaries chronicle the life of William H. Stevens from his arrival in San Francisco on November 4, 1851 to March 30, 1855. Stevens spent most of his time in San Francisco and Sacamento performing such jobs as carpentry, tanning, delivering milk, working at saw mills and grist-mills, and prospecting around the Stanislaus River. Stevens describes murders in San Francisco, fires and floods in Sacramento in 1852, and looking for work. The second volume contains copies of two quit-claim deeds for property in San Francisco and work records for Fernando C. Davis, Matthew Hennessy, H. Mygatt, Lyman K. Smith, and Stevens. The deeds and records probably concern a joint ownership of a tanning yard.
