David Burnet secured a contract to settle 300 families near Nacogdoches, Texas, from the Mexican Government. Papers include the terms of the contract and a second petition to settle 200 additional families on lands which adjoined the first grant of land. A document signed by Governor Viesca sanctions the transaction.

David Gouverneur Burnet (1788-1870) was born in Newark, New Jersey. About 1817 he moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana, and in 1831 to Texas. He was ad interim president of the Republic of Texas from March 17 to October 22, 1836. In 1836 he was elected vice president of the Republic of Texas, serving part time as secretary of state and acting president. From the guide to the David G.
