Richard H. Kern was the older brother of Edward Meyer Kern. Richard was also an illustrator and scientist who, like Edward, accompanied the surveyor John C. FreĢmont on an expedition through the Rocky Mountains. He later worked for the U.S. Army, drawing topographical views of Indian territories. Unfortunately, he was killed in an ambush in 1853. Simpson, J. H. (James Hervey), 1813-1883

James Hervey Simpson was a West Point cadet who served with the Topographical Corps to explore and survey the Green Bay, Wis., area. He later surveyed the Santa Fe Trail in the late 1840s and mapped out routes to California in the 1850s within the Utah Territory, where he was named chief of topographical engineers.
