Joseph Libbey Folsom papers, 1849-1852.

The papers consist of Joseph Folsom's will, dated Nov. 29, 1849; a lease between Anna Maria Spark and David W. Hunt signed by Folsom in San Francisco in 1851; 2 ALS to Folsom from John Sherwood in 1851, D. Rogers in 1849, both from St. Croix, and an ALS from Folsom to John White Geary requesting a survey of certain streets in San Francisco, March 1850.

Joseph Libbey Folsom was born May 19, 1817, in New Hampshire. He was a graduate of West Point and went to California in 1846 as Captain and Assistant Quartermaster of Stevenson's Regiment of New York Volunteers. After the Mexican War, he settled in San Francisco and was the Collector of the Port of San Francisco. He invested in real estate in San Francisco and beyond, notably purchasing rights to William A. John W. Geary was a lawyer, politician and Union general in the Civil War (1861-1865). He was born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania on 30 December 1819. After serving as a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War (1846-1848), Geary went to California for the 1849 gold rush.
