William Fraser Tolmie (1812-1886), graduated from the Medical College of Edinburgh, joined the service of the Hudson's Bay Company, arrived at Fort Vancouver in 1833, and later became chief trader at Fort Nisqually and agent of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company. Elwood Evans (1828-1898), born in Philadelphia, went to Oregon Territory in 1851 as deputy collector of customs at Nisqually. From 1859 to 1861, he served as mayor of the newly incorporated town of Olympia, Washington.
