Letter : to Robert Patterson / by President Jefferson, 1803 Mar 2.

Reports authorization by a secret act of Congress for an expedition to explore the Missouri River and beyond to the western ocean. Jefferson proposes to appoint his secretary, Meriwether Lewis, as leader. He discusses his qualifications, and asks that Patterson, then professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, advise Lewis on scientific matters before his departure. He requests Patterson to maintain secrecy.
