The letter criticizes James W. Wiley's editorial in Wiley's newspaper, the Olympia Pioneer and Democrat. Wiley was answering an earlier letter by Gilmore Hays about the causes of the Indian War. Hays's letter had been printed in the newspaper Union, but had been addressed to Joseph Lane, delegate to Congress.
