A collection of letters describing the problems which beset the city of Jalapa when it was occupied by the Americans after the battle of Cerro Gordo. Thomas Childs, as its first military governor, permitted the Ayuntamiento to carry on its own government with few exceptions; he was succeeded by George Wurtz Hughes. Some of the difficulties concerned the activities of the guerrillas in towns around Jalapa and on the highways, care of the wounded American soldiers, pillaging of livestock, election of new alcaldes, and the readjustment for continuing local affairs after the American troops were withdrawn.
