Serving as a captain in the U.S. Army 6th Infantry during the Mexican War, T. L. Alexander describes his voyage from New Orleans to Vera Cruz via the steamers Alabama and Dragon, routines of camp life, and his transfer from Scott's camp to Worth's Division. A brief account of Alexander's military career is enclosed in the diary. A map shows the quarters for the officers, the soldiers barracks, and the parade ground at the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa which is located off the coast of Vera Cruz, Mexico.
