Copy of the proclamation to the inhabitants of California, / by John Drake Sloat, 1846 Jul 7.

In the event of war between Mexico and the U.S., John D. Sloat, commander of the naval forces in the Pacific, was ordered to occupy San Francisco. Hearing that the Mexicans had invaded Texas, Sloat carried out his orders whereupon he issued this proclamation extending the laws and liberties of the United States to the inhabitants of California.
