The journal-letter to Murdock McPherson describes an 1847-48 journey from Fort McPherson (Northwest Territories) down the Bell, Porcupine, and Yukon rivers, and the return journey to Lapiers House. The narrative records building the fort, the characteristics and customs of the natives, and the Russian fur traders. There is a Kutchin vocabulary, meteorological journal, and 15 drawings.

Alexander Hunter Murray, born in Scotland, emigrated to the United States, joined the American Fur Company, and in 1846 entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company.
