George Gibbs, a New York lawyer, joined the Regiment of Mounted Rifles in 1849, went to Fort Vancouver, Washington, and remained in the Pacific Northwest for the next eleven years. Born and educated in New York City, James G. Cooper (1830-1902) was a naturalist and physician with Isaac Stevens' Pacific Railroad Survey expedition of 1853. George Suckley, United States Army surgeon and naturalist, participated in the Northern Pacific Railroad Route Survey led by Isaac I. Stevens.
