In 1869, Newman and his family traveled by wagon from Madison Valley, Montana Territory to San Diego by way of Virginia City, Pocatello Station, Great Salt Lake, Elko Station, Ruby Valley, Austin, Walker's Pass, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, and San Luis Rey. The entries are terse, giving facts only about the route, weather, purchases, mileage, and condition of the land for grazing and hunting. The diary is followed by a complete cash account of the trip and other accounts and memoranda.
