Grow sent his diary to A. Richardson in three installments. The first section dated Lyons, Iowa, covers the journey from Clinton, Wisconsin through Beloit, DeWitt, Iowa, to "The Bluffs." The second section dated Kanesville, describes the formation of the Beloit Company, preparation for the journey, and the addition of new members, including Silas Newcomb. The third section covers the journey from Kanesville to Fort Laramie.
