Journals of the United States Emigrant Escort Service, 1861-1864.

The journals are a daily record describing the route, conditions of the roads, camps, and visits at forts. They note meeting the Oregon Volunteers under Maury in 1862 and 1863. The authors of the five journals, in order, are: Capt. Medorem Crawford, Lt. LeRoy Crawford (Medorem's brother), Dr. R. B. Ironside (journalist), and Samuel Gillespie Crawford (Medorem's father).

Oregon legislator (1847-1849; 1860); federal collector of internal revenue (1864-1869) and appraiser of customs (1871-1875). Settled early in Oregon (1842) and operated one of first mercantile stores there. His eldest son, also named Medorem, was first white child born west of Willamette River. Captain LeRoy Crawford was the brother of Medorem Crawford (1819-1893), an 1842 immigrant to Oregon and early Oregon politician. Etta D.
