Memoranda for additions to Lord Orford's Anecdotes of painting in England / H.E., 1822.

Manuscript, in a single hand, listing Musgrave's additions and notes written from a copy of the second edition of Horace Walpole's Anecdotes of Painting. The entries provide either further or contradictory biographical information about artists named in Walpole's work, and cite bibliographical references. Each entry is annotated with information about where the comment appears in Walpole's edition. The manuscript also includes a list of additional artists which Musgrave compiled after the title page, speculating that they would appear in Walpole's fourth volume.

Sir William Musgrave (1735-1800) was an administrator, print collector, and antiquary. He was involved with numerous cultural societies, including the Royal Society where he became a member in 1774 and in 1780 was appointed one of the society's vice-presidents. Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh. In 1801, in his capacity as a doctor, he accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, and on his return to England became a regular inmate of Holland House. Although he served in 1806 as under-secretary to the commissioners for treating with America, Allen is best known for his social life at Holland House, especially as documented in his diary.
