Robert Swanton Platt was born in Columbus, Ohio, on December 4, 1891. He graduated from Yale in 1914, and taught at the Yale Collegiate School in Changsha, China from 1914-1915. Platt obtained a Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1920. In 1918, Platt joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, teaching there until his retirement in 1957 as chairman of the department of geography.
