Myrtle Henrietta Exley was born in 1893 in Hancock, Michigan. Her father was a blacksmith, carriage and wagon maker in the Houghton and Hancock area. She attended the University of Michigan, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in 1916. She became a teacher in Hancock in 1921. She also taught high school in Hamtramck, Michigan, near Detroit, and in central Michigan at the Central Normal School in Mt. Pleasant. In 1901 Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan received funding for two additional buildings. The Civil and Mining Engineering Building, was built at a cost of $28,880, was a two-story hip-roofed structure with a five-story tower centered on the front. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937.
