This collection concerns genealogical research into the John Bishop family of Connecticut, as conducted by William Whitney Cone, working closely with the Kansas State Historical Society and some of its employees, such as George Allen Root, curator of archives. Includes notes about family members, forms to be filled out with thorough lineal information by still-living family members, correspondence (including letters to and from George Martin, then Secretary of the KSHS), etc. Collection includes volumes of notes devoted to specific individuals and branches of the Bishop family. The gathered information extends back at least to the 17th century for individuals living in the United States.

George Washington Martin was born in Pennsylvania to David and Mary Howell Martin on 30 June 1841. In 1855 his father went to Kansas, taking a claim near Lecompton, Douglas County, and two years later brought his family back with him. In the meantime, George had started working in the printing trade. He continued in this line in Kansas and finished his apprenticeship back east in Philadelphia.
