Arizona Scenes by H. Buehman photograph album, ca. 1880-1884.

Summary: Photograph album labeled "Arizona Scenes by H. Buehman, Tucson, A.T." consisting mostly of images of Tucson buildings and street scenes; Apache, Pima, Maricopa, and Tohono O'dham Indians, and San Xavier Mission, taken circa 1880-1884. Includes images of the Pima County Courthouse, Barrio Libre homes, interior views of San Xavier altars, a Pima Indian police force, Maricopa Bill, Tohono O'odham women carrying burden baskets and ollas, and a costumed girl celebrating Mexican Independence day in 1884. Apache images include two men under arrest; Apache scouts with knives, rifles, and guns; Apaches with bow and arrows; Chiricahua, Chiricahua chief; Apache chief Nana; Sanchez, Apache Chief; and a copy of a Geronimo image. Some images will also be found elsewhere in AHS's photo files. A facsimile copy of the album is present as well as copy prints.

Biographical note: Photographer; Henry Buehman was born in Bremen, Germany, the son of Ludwig and Annie Buehman, on May 14, 1851. In 1868, with three years of photographic experience under his belt, Henry emigrated to the United States. He first went to New York, then to California. He arrived in Tucson in 1873 where he first worked for Juan Rodriguez studio, at the corner of Court and Maiden Lane, for about a year, then he bought out Rodriguez and established a photography/dentistry business in...
