This collection contains: A letter to David Rorer from U.S. Army Captain Jacob Brown (Little Rock, Arizona Territory) dated September 14, 1832 requesting an investigation and report on the status of provisions for the Seneca Agency, Clark's Prairie, Indian Territory, and the feasibility of procuring and transporting supplies to the agency; Rorer's detailed response to Captain Brown's letter, 1832; a history of the First United States Dragoons (1st U.S. Cavalry) prepared at Rorer's request by Lt. James C. Parrott who was a member of that regiment, 1867; Rorer's account of a journey from St. Joseph, MO to Burlington, IA by stage and train during the Civil War with mentions of rebel incidents and sentiment in Missouri; three handwritten installments of a history of Iowa: "Part of the Fifth: Iowa Under the United States, 4th, As Part of the Territory of Missouri, Chapter I" [1812-1815], "Part of the Fifth: Iowa Under the United States, 4th, As a Part of Missouri Territory, Chapter II" [1815-1819], "Part of the Fifth: Iowa Under the United States, 5th, As A Part of the Unorganized Territory of North West Missouri" [1821-1824]; and a list of citations to newspaper articles making reference to Rorer, generally and pertaining to the origin of the nickname "Hawkeyes" for Iowans.
