Peter Porter was born and educated in Brisbane, Australia, and worked as a reporter before coming to England in 1951. He worked in advertising, and after 1968 was a freelance writer, broadcaster, journalist, lecturer and visiting professor. He was the author of many volumes of poetry as well as radio plays and articles in newspapers and magazines.
