Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1878. Sinclair was an American author, novelist, journalist, and political activist who wrote many books in several genres. He is most well-known for his exposé, The Jungle regarding conditions in Chicago's meat packing plants, which influenced the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. William L. Werner was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1894. He received a bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg College in 1915 and served in France with the 316th Infantry during World War I. He was an instructor in English at Penn State in 1920, earning a master's degree in 1922.
