The collection contains three letters. Dye writes to Quinn, 13 June 1931, typescript carbon, about Professor [William Louser] Werner's study on Frank Stockton. Quinn replies to Dye, 20 June 1931, typescript, indicating he received a very cordial letter from Werner that will make it possible for his graduate student to continue his thesis if he desires to. In the third letter, Quinn writes to Dye, 11 Sept. 1931, typescript, asking Dye not to support the nomination of Upton Sinclair for the Nobel prize in literature. Both of Quinn's letters contain his signature and the letterhead for the University of Pennsylvania.

William L. Werner was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1894. He received a bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg College in 1915 and served in France with the 316th Infantry during World War I. He was an instructor in English at Penn State in 1920, earning a master's degree in 1922.
