When Mary Strong Clemens (1873-1968) was collecting botanical specimens in China in 1912-1913, she evidently made it a practice to write messages to friends on the backs of photographs taken by her chaplin husband. Thirty-two of these photographs bearing Mary Clemens handwritten prose, poems and quotations, turned up in the files of the herbarium at the San Diego Natural History Museum.
