ArchivalResource

Charles Rockwell correspondence and financial records, 1767-1824.

The earliest document in the collection is a deed for William Rockwell of Norwich, Connecticut. The remainder of the collection relates to Charles Rockwell, a Norwich merchant and ship's captain. His vessels went to the West Indies, Savannah, Georgia, and in Europe to Amsterdam and Liverpool. His business correspondents and sometimes partners included Jabez Huntington, John Hamilton, Peter Lanman, Hezekiah and Jabez Perkins, and Elisha and William Coit. The correspondence primarily concerns selling cargoes, repairing and insuring vessels, and debts. The vessels named in the collection are the Sloop Little Nat, the Sloop Hope, and the ships Stabrock, Commerce, William and Thomas Gibbons. In addition to business letters are a few missives from his sister Betsy Rockwell, his wife Sally, and his son Charles W. Rockwell.
