Collection consists of one illustrated notebook with brown paper wrappers (MA 3775.1), nine loose leaves from a spiral-bound notebook (MA 3775.2), three individual leaves containing poems (MA 3775.3-5), and one smaller booklet containing 3 p. of poems (MA 3775.6). Items contain what appear to be fair copies or transcriptions of many of the poems; dates of composition frequently appear beside their titles. Plath (1932-1963) was educated at Smith College (A.B., 1955) and Newnham College, Cambridge University (A.B., 1957). She married Ted Hughes in 1956 and taught English at Smith College, 1957-1958. Plath and Hughes returned to England in Dec. 1959 and separated in 1962. In her lifetime she published two books: The Colossus and other poems (1960) and The bell jar (1963).
