DeForest C. Jarvis World War II letters, 1943-1945.

Dr. Jarvis used letter-writing as a favored way to promote his ideas on health, and often used a newsletter format. Thus, when his youth orchestra members went off to war in the 1940s, he became the natural clearing-house for letters from 35 former members who were either abroad in the service or civilians at home. This collection consists of 66 letters, of which 36 are V-mail letters, and related materials. In the letters, Dr. Jarvis compiled and dutifully transcribed all the letters he received from his former orchestra members and adds some of his own light-hearted commentary. He then distributed this newsletter to 35 former orchestra members, including Miss (then Lt.) Iside Brusetti, donor of the collection, who was serving as an RN in Bristol, England, during the war. The Sept. 18, 1943, V-mail letter contains the names of all 35 recipients. The newsletters contain mostly lengthy letters from the servicemen serving in the various theaters, from which we get a sampling of wartime experiences (to the extent allowed by the censors). What is always evident is a sense of the lasting impact Dr. Jarvis' youth orchestra had on their lives. The collection contains material of biographical interest on the orchestra members, all of whom came from Barre, Vermont (Folder 0 contains an alphabetical list of surnames appearing in the letters).
