Victor J. Perini was born in New York City in 1889. He began his career as a tool maker in New Jersey and moved to Detroit in 1910. He started working at Ford Motor Company as a toolmaker at the company's Piquette Avenue plant in Detroit, Michigan in April, 1910. He worked his way up to become superintendent of the Motor Building at Ford's Higland Park plant and supervised construction of the Liberty aircraft motor during World War I.
