This collection consists of correspondence (1910-1912, 1916) among several members of the Burrell family of Choteau, Montana. (SC 2582) This collection consists of correspondence (1910-1912, 1916) among several members of the Burrell family of Choteau, Montana. Most of the letters are between John Angus Burrell and his parents Alexander and Abigail Burrell. There are a few letters of other family members. John's letters are primarily concerned with his student life at the University of Wisconsin and later his work in Butte. Abigail Burrell's are mostly concerned with Alexander's cataract surgery in Philadelphia and other family concerns. Alexander's letters deal with running the ranch and other business concerns. In addition there are obituaries of Alexander, Abigail and John Burrell.

Alexander "Alex" Burrell was born in Edinburg, Scotland, on January 14, 1851, a son of Archibald and Eliza (Telfer) Burrell. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1856. After the death of their father, Alex and his older brother Henry Burrell got practical experience in coal mining at Morris, Illinois.
