Bennett Berger was born in 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in the Bronx and he served as a Marine during World War II in the Pacific. He did his undergraduate work in sociology at Hunter University then received his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. After receiving his Ph.D., he served as a faculty member in the School of Communication at the University of Illinois from 1959 to 1963.
