Martin Welles collection, 1727-1917, 1950.

Assorted documents and manuscripts, probably collected by Martin Welles of Hartford, Connecticut. The bulk of the papers concern Martin and his correspondence with Liang Tun Yen discussing the education of the latter's son, Ye Yu Che Chiang Liang, 1910-1917. Liang Tun Yen had been a student in Hartford and associated with the Chinese Educational Mission and went on to be a diplomat. Letters from 1924-1926 relate to selling property at the death of Liang Tun Yen. An earlier Martin Welles of Wethersfield, Connecticut, is represented by two deeds, 1823 and 1853. Two letters were addressed to Seth Clark, the one dated 1846 sent to Seth Clark, engraver at Hartford. John B. Cone of Hartford is represented by two deeds, 1895 and 1901. The Eagle Laboratory Company was located in Hartford. In 1833, subscribers petitioned the directors to hire an attorney to plead a case against the company. A small account book contains a few entries at the back that relate to Eagle Laboratory, but the majority of the entries revolve around the settlement of Frances Norton Welles' estate, 1870-1878 by Roger Welles. R.A. Ewing received four letters, one in 1848 from W.S. Warren about his visit to Hartford, one about a card game, one concerning the appointment of a director to a bank, and the fourth about getting a Temperance speaker, 1853. Insurance was issued on the Sloop Lion of Branford, Connecticut, in 1793. The Norwich & Woodstock Turnpike issued one share to the Norwich Company, 1803; in the same folder is a composition by Jedediah Deming, undated. Poet Lydia Sigourney is represented by an invitation from "Wadsworth", ca. 1840, and a letter from her to Dr. Jarvis, undated. Jason Whiting of Litchfield penned two letters to his brother Samuel of West Hartford in 1824 and 1828. Samuel is further represented by two receipts, 1834 and 1842. Assorted legal documents include a 1727 deed for land in Glastonbury; a court summons, 1762; a deed from Patrick Lee to Sidney A. Ensign for land in West Hartford, 1860; a deed from Henry Martin to Roderick Terry and Joseph H. Cone for land in Hartford, 1865; and an agreement between Jane E. Hills and John B. Cone, 1907, for a property in Hartford.
