Collection of family papers descended in the Nash family of Killingworth, Connecticut. The older materials relate to the Sanford family of Redding and Weston, Connecticut and consist primarily of deeds with some estate and legal records. Sanford names that appear frequently are Gershom Bradley, Bradley, Lemuel, Rachel, Oliver and Ephraim. The papers are arranged alphabetically by last name, starting with the Bartram family of Redding, also represented by deeds. Richard Demarest married M. Esther Smith in 1907. That event is documented by a series of bills for Esther's trousseau. Esther and Richard are represented by extensive incoming family correspondence, 1891-1950. Several deeds to and from the Gorham family are followed by a significant number of deeds, correspondence and financial records of Milo Lee, the husband of Lucy Ann Bartram. Lee was a hat maker, but also an agent and inventor. He served as agent for the sale of a shingle making machine and patented an improved butter making machine. He also speculated in land, having deeds from such towns as Redding, Danbury and Westport in Connecticut, Oneonta, New York, and in Ohio. Eli Smith was a partner in the Wheel and Wood Bending Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, which is reflected in his correspondence and financial papers. His estate papers are also part of the collection. He married Mary Elizabeth Wright and she is represented by correspondence , 1861-1874, diary pages, and financial and legal papers, 1891-1904. The collection also contains papers of Horace and William B. Smith. Additional family names that appear in the collection are Wakeman, Wheeler, and Mary B. and William B. Wright. Of interest in the printed material acquired with the collection is a catalog of pictures by the pupils of the Misses Downes of Westport, 1872, and an advertising flier for the Golden Hill Seminary in Bridgeport, 1893-1894.
