Letters of Friedrich Ockershauser, 1860-1864 , (bulk 1864, Apr. 21-Aug. 24)

Letters from Friedrich Ockershauser to his wife Marie written between Apr. 21 and Aug. 24, 1864 from Tennessee and Georgia (1864, Apr. 21 and 26; May 1, 8, and May 20; June 8, 13, 17, and 26; July 1, 6, and July 24; Aug. 4, 9, 13, 18, 22, and 24; and three undated letters). Also included is a letter from Marie to her husband (1864, Aug. 7). Also included are Ockershauser's certificate of citizenship (1860, Oct. 29), cased tintype of a young woman, probably Marie Ockershauser, in a beaded leather pouch, ephemera, and copies of: 1) The Invitation, a popular hymn attirbuted to Anna Shipton (Philadelphia: Protestant Episcopal Book society, [1864]) 2) Habermann, Johann, Christliche Morgen and Abend Gebeter auf alle Tage der Woche (Reutlingen: bei Justus Fleischbauer, n.d.), with an 1850 inscription in German; and 3) Das Neue Testament unsers Herrn und Heilandes Jesu Christi (New-York : Amerikanische Bibel-gegellschaft, 1863.

Friedrich (Frederick) Ockershauser (1826-1864), a German American Union soldier. Ockershauser, a native of Württemberg, filed an application for citizenship in a Cincinnati court in 1858 and was granted full citizenship two years later. He and his wife Marie (b. 1830) settled in Woods Station, Butler County, Ohio. In the spring of 1864, Ochershauser joined Co.
