Paul L. Hoefler papers 1925-1982.

This collection, contained in one 5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box, two 2.5 x 15.5 x 10-inch boxes, three 30 x 24 x 3-inch boxes, and one 14 x 16 x3-inch box, contains journals, correspondence, film catalogs, newspaper clippings, biographical material and other papers related to the work of educational and documentary filmmaker Paul Hoefler. The first box of files contains copies of journals, written in the form of letters to his wife, and other documents from Hoefler's 1925-1926 journey to Africa. One journal entry from March 27, 1926, notes, "When the ship entered the Djibouti harbor it was met by dozens of small craft which brought out boys who dived for coins. These totos were very clever, never missing any coin thrown into the sea." The files also have a journal from Hoefler's 1931-1932 trip to India, several literary manuscripts and film catalogs. The second box holds maps of India and Africa, a small file of newspaper clippings, biographical material and correspondence related to Hoefler"s daughter, Jacqueline Troyer, and cassette recordings of Troyer's oral history. The third box of files contains more Hoefler correspondence as well as agreements and financial documents. The fourth box holds a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, a poster and a photograph. The fifth box holds newspaper clippings related to Hoefler's film Africa Speaks, while the final two boxes hold still more clippings, including a review of Hoefler's book Africa Speaks, published by The John C. Winston Co. in 1931 and available at the Alfred M. Bailey Library & Archives at the Denver Museum.

Paul L. Hoefler was a cinematographer and adventurer who in 1925 produced the earliest motion picture showing Bushmen of southern Africa and in 1931 the earliest sound documentary film, also set in Africa. Both African film expeditions were organized and carried out while he lived in Denver. Paul Louis Hoefler was born in 1893 in Spokane, Washington.
