Sociology has been taught at Princeton since at least 1895, but it did not emerge as an independent department until the mid-20th century. When academic departments were first established at Princeton in 1904, sociology was included in the Department of History, Politics, and Economics. In 1913, history and politics split off and the department became the Department of Economics and Social Institutions, which was renamed the Department of Economics and Sociology in 1954 ...
