George Gershwin was a composer and pianist; his best-known works are Rhapsody in Blue (1924), An American in Paris (1928), "I Got Rhythm" (1930), and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), which included the hit "Summertime". Duncan was an African American baritone singer who originated the role of Porgy in George Gershwin's folk opera Porgy and Bess.
