Collection includes regimental orders for Lieutenant Colonel Jesse Tapley (of Danvers, MA) from Colonel Eben Sutten and Colonel Nathan Tapley. Jesse Tapley and Eben Sutten were members of the 3rd Regiment, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Massachusetts Militia; Nathan Tapley was a member of 5th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
