Letter : to William Govett Romaine, [1839]

Undated letter signed by G. A. Hoskins, the Hon. Secretary of the White River Expedition, to W. G. Romaine, giving extensive instructions regarding his supervision of the individual who is to be sent to explore the sources of the Nile. Together with a passport, partly printed and completed in manuscript, granting W. G. Romaine and his companion Mahomet leave to travel through France to Marseilles, signed by the British Ambassador to the Court of France, the first Earl Granville, and countersigned by Romaine, with the vignette of the order of the garter at the top. The passport is dated 4 May 1839 and endorsed on the verso by various authorities. These were both contained in a folder from the Royal Geographical Society.
