This collection contains the records of the Kansas Department of Revenue. The majority of the records are subject files containing correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes, reports, statistics, conference materials, and legal documents pertaining to a variety of topics of interest maintained for reference purposes. The collection is comprised of several case and litigation files series, documenting the department's responsibility in hearing cases regarding tax protests and appeals that primarily concern property valuation. These files consist of legal documents with related correspondence. Another large series is licensing files, relating to licenses issued to retail liquor and drinking establishments to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. The collection also contains a variety of documents on microfilm, such as abstract assessments of all property valuations within each Kansas county, tax assessments for various telephone companies, and ad valorem ratio study cards, providing ad valorem tax assessment information for the cities within each county.
