The Kansas Department of Health was created in 1963 and replaced the State Board of Health as an agency. The Board of Health was originally created in 1885. The board, however, remained as a ten-member body that governed the Department of Health. In 1974, both the Department and the Board of Health were abolished and the present agency, the Department of Health and Environment, was created.
