The Wayland Hand collection of superstition and popular belief on index cards, 1937?-1986?

An extensive collection of categorized and cross-referenced beliefs on index cards; arranged alphabetically in ten card cabinets. The information was gathered from all parts of the United States by Wayland D. Hand, his colleagues, and students over a lifetime of folklore research at the University of California at Los Angeles. Each 3x5 card contains a short note about a belief, but very little (if any) informant or contextual data. The information was gathered from people, books, and ephemeral sources. Subjects include: illness and remedies, physical attributes, emotional or mental ailments, signs and portents, health and hygiene, beauty, love and courtship, marriage, sex, and pregnancy, birth and infancy, death and dying, funerals, cooking, food and eating, clothing, sewing, adornment, prosperity and wealth, work and professions, friends and enemies, visitors, thieves, liars, murderers, religions, good news and bad news, good and bad luck, communication and language, wishes, sleep and dreams, holidays and celebrations, times, numbers, weather and seasons, major storms, floods and disasters, cosmic phenomena, plants and animals and their care, witchcraft, ghosts, magic, and evil.
