A captain's story 1965-1972

The memoirs of J. Alan Day, titled A Captain's Story, offer a glimpse into army life during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The author describes his tours of duty in West Germany and Vietnam. He writes about his frustrations with the Army's bureaucracy, the tense racial relations in the US Army, his visit to East Germany and involvement in the CIA-run Operation Phoenix among other topics. He also offers descriptions of wartime Saigon, Hue, and Cholon.

The Department of Military Science was established at the University of Oregon in 1919. The school had sponsored military training through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program before the creation of a Military Science department.
