Michel Schooyans was born on July 6, 1930 in Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium. In 1955, Schooyans became an ordained priest of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. He earned doctorate degrees in philosophy in 1955 and in 1958, and in 1978 he earned a doctorate in theology. Schooyans has taught in universities throughout the world with the majority of his appointments taking him to schools in Europe, Central America, and South America.
