General description of the collection: The Mary H. Fisher Papers consists of her memoir describing her service as a United States (U.S.) Army Nurse during World War II (WWII). In her brief memoir, she describes her experience during the sinking of the British Hospital Ship "Newfoundland" near Salerno, Italy. Fisher describes living in tents, contending with rain and wind, and her unit's Christmas tree decorations in 1943. She describes the impact of German air raids and artillery fire on the 95th Evacuation Hospital at Anzio Beachhead. Fisher also describes her temporary duty at Dachau Concentration Camp in May 1945. She describes the condition of the survivors, and the difficulty of feeding them.

Captain Mary H. Fisher served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. During WWII, she was assigned to the 95th Evacuation Hospital. Her unit first served in Oujda, North Africa, then was sent to Salerno, Italy. Fisher and the other nurses from her unit were shipped aboard the British Hospital Ship "Newfoundland."
